What is the Priority Services Register?
Last checked 28 October 2026. Based on Ofgem, the Energy Networks Association, thepsr.co.uk and GOV.UK Be Ready. Applies in England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland is covered below.
What you get
- Advance notice of planned power cuts, where possible.
- Priority support in an emergency, and a dedicated phone line.
- Help such as alternative heating and cooking if your gas goes off, or bottled water if your water supply fails.
- A password scheme, so you can check that anyone calling at your door from an energy company is genuine.
- Bills and information in large print, braille or other formats, and the option to nominate someone to receive them.
Being on the register does not guarantee your power stays on or comes back faster, and it does not mean extra compensation payments.
Who can join
You may be eligible if someone in your home:
- has reached state pension age
- is pregnant, or there are young children at home (under 5)
- has a disability or a long-term medical condition, including mental health conditions
- relies on medical equipment that needs electricity
- has a sight or hearing condition, or no sense of smell
- has extra communication needs, including not speaking English as a first language
- is recovering from an injury or a hospital stay, or has had a recent bereavement
How to join
It is free. Sign up at thepsr.co.uk, which takes you to your local electricity network operator, or ask your energy supplier. Registering with one usually shares your details with the others, such as your supplier, gas network and water company. Check this when you sign up, and ask to be added again if you switch supplier.
Northern Ireland
NIE Networks runs a Medical Customer Care Register for people who rely on electrical equipment for their health, such as oxygen concentrators or home dialysis. Register online with your MPRN (on your bill) or call 03457 643 643. Your electricity and gas suppliers also keep customer care registers for other extra needs. NI Water has its own register.
Report a power cut
Call 105 in England, Scotland and Wales. It is free and connects you to your local network operator. In Northern Ireland, call 03457 643 643. If life is at risk, call 999.
